PhD (SFU), MA, MMus, BMus., Certificate in Creative Writing
I’m a mixed-race writer, researcher, flutist, and teacher based in Kjipuktuk (Halifax).
I’m passionate about life stories, and the myriad ways these stories emerge: from traditional diaries, letters, and memoirs, to archival ephemera like photographs, ticket stubs, and lists.
In addition to a memoir (What the Oceans Remember, 2019), I have published non-fiction, and poetry in a range of literary journals as well as in anthologies. As a flutist, I’ve performed around the globe, and for six years served as principal flutist with the Portland Baroque Orchestra.
I hold a PhD from SFU and have taught at Memorial University, UBC, SFU, and Bangor University. I’ve also offered workshops and webinars for the Creative Non-Fiction Collective, Writers’ Federation of NS, American Library Association, and Manitoba Craft Council, among others. In Winter 2025, I was writer-in-residence at the Centre for Creative Writing and Oral Culture, UManitoba.
I love laughing, the colour red, improv quilting, archives, chocolate, the Atlantic wind, flute playing, shortbread, old houses, books, books, books, sunshine on waves, rice pudding, feminist theory, a cozy duvet on a cold night, big earrings, old photographs, found poetry, icebergs, extra old Gouda cheese, family histories, and did I mention the colour red?
