Nova Scotia Graduate Scholarship—Master of Journalism

Nova Scotia Graduate Scholarship—Master of Journalism

All Classes Resume: All King’s and Dalhousie classes will resume as of September 23. Learn more.

King’s Master of Journalism students are eligible to receive a $10,000 Nova Scotia Graduate Scholarship to support research for their professional projects.

These scholarships were established by the Province of Nova Scotia to enable cutting-edge research in priority areas and support innovation in the province.

At King’s, these scholarships are awarded in-program, once students have firmed up their professional project research. To be eligible, students must normally be under the supervision of both a faculty member and an external advisor and the project must be one that is doing substantial, innovative journalistic research, with ambitions and high potential to create public impact and benefits. There must also be the intention and high potential to publish externally.

Application Process

Students must submit an application. The application must have, at a minimum, the following elements:

  • A detailed abstract of the planned research (1,000 to 1,200 words) that includes a brief description of the planned story, intended research (human, documents, data) and an explanation of why the story will have important public impacts and benefits.
  • A preliminary research budget (with the understanding that the research will evolve). This can be done in an Excel spreadsheet.
  • The student’s CV.

Abstracts must be clear about the source of any factual assertion in the abstract, whether that’s through the use of formal citations or simply integrating the information into the body of the work, as journalists usually do. Links to authoritative web sources, open data sources and other supporting materials can also be included to assist the decision-making process.

In addition to the student’s main submission, the application should be endorsed by the professional project coordinator and the external advisor (if applicable). This can be done by way of email by the coordinator and advisor directly to adminj@ukings.ca.

Upon completion of their project, each recipient will be asked to file a report, endorsed by their supervisors, documenting their use of the funds.

For further information, contact the professional projects coordinator Lisa Taylor, at lisa.taylor@ukings.ca.

Applications are due by August 31 to adminj@ukings.ca.

Please use the subject line NS graduate scholarship application—your first and last names. Your support letters should not be included in the application package you submit. Instead, they should be sent directly by the coordinator and advisor to adminj@ukings.ca. Applications will be reviewed by a departmental committee and decisions made by September 30.
