Dr. Sankar Muthu Speaks at King's

March 11, 2010

The University of King’s College and the Early Modern Studies Programme are pleased to present a public lecture by Dr. Sankar Muthu entitled “Global Connections in Enlightenment Political Thought” on Thursday, March 11, 2010. This lecture is part of the Early Modern Studies Programme’s tenth anniversary celebrations.

Dr. Muthu comes from the University of Chicago and is the author of the acclaimed book Enlightenment Against Empire. His talk will address the concerns Enlightenment thinkers and activists had over the moral implications of global commerce in the eighteenth century, including issues emerging from the European slave trade and the very institution of slavery. Dr. Muthu will also examine Enlightenment attempts to foster a genuine universal community of humankind across borders.

“The lecture will not only be interdisciplinary in nature—encompassing early modern history, political and economic theory, moral philosophy and intellectual history in general—but also relates strongly to the interdisciplinary scholarship happening throughout King’s,” says Dr. Simon Kow, director of the Early Modern Studies Programme. “It will be of interest to faculty and students across King’s, Dalhousie and other local universities, and to members of the public interested in the history of ideas and the origins of globalization.”

Dr. Muthu’s lecture will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the KTS Lecture Hall (2nd floor, New Academic Building, 6350 Coburg Road.) A reception will follow. All are welcome to attend and admission is free.
