La Compagnie de Santi Ostinati, the last travelling commedia dell’arte troupe find themselves in The Pit, lost and broke and ready to go home. A mysterious benefactor has offered to fund their trip home, but only if they are able to perform an impossible scenario: The History of Man. During their attempt to complete this mammoth task, they will laugh, cry, fight, make up, argue about the nature of God, argue about the nature of the actor, butcher the western cannon, and eventually fall in love with themselves, each other, and the theatre.
