Designated entrance awards are offered separately from general entrance scholarships.

One-year Bachelor of Journalism program awards

The following awards are for students applying to the one-year Bachelor of Journalism program and are designed to make the program more accessible.

Journalism Entrance Awards

The Journalism Entrance Award is valued at $2,000 and is designed to encourage students to apply to and register at King’s who might not otherwise do so because of the financial commitment.  Priority will be given to students with demonstrable financial need. Bachelor of Journalism Supplemental Scholarship Form

This form MUST be completed in order to be considered for a Bachelor of Journalism scholarship. The deadline for completion is February 15, 2011. Supplemental Scholarship Form (PDF)

 

Journalism Designated Awards

Applicants will be automatically considered based on self identification on the application for admission. Students interested in these awards should declare their interest on the application form. Award decisions are made based on the strength of the application for admission to the program.

Bachelor of Journalism Diversity Scholarship

A $9,000 scholarship for a One-Year Bachelor of Journalism student who is a Canadian Citizen or permanent resident. Preference will be given to candidates of African Canadian or Aboriginal descent, but the award is open to all persons of a visible minority.

ATV/CTV Media Scholarship

This scholarship is valued at $4,000 and is offered in support of the College's commitment to diversity. Preference will be given to a student of African Canadian or Aboriginal descent and who demonstrates an interest in television journalism.

Audrey Stevenson Memorial Scholarship

Established by Audrey Stevenson's family in recognition of her 30-year contribution to journalism in the province of New Brunswick, this scholarship is awarded annually to a female student entering the one-year Bachelor of Journalism program.

Reader's Digest Journalism Scholarship

This $2,000 scholarship is awarded to a student in the Bachelor of Journalism program who is a member of a visible minority or a member of other under-represented groups, as determined by the Journalism Admission Committee

Rogers Broadcasting All-News Radio Scholarship 1

This scholarship is valued at $5,000 and awarded to a student who is a member of a visible minority or under-represented societal group. The recipient must be a Canadian Citizen or permanent resident. Preference is given to candidates with a demonstrated interest in radio journalism.

Rogers Broadcasting All-News Radio Scholarship 2

This scholarship is valued at $5,000 and awarded to a student with permanent residence in Nova Scotia or New Brunswick. Preference is given to candidates with a demonstrated interest in radio journalism.

Evanov Radio Group Award

The Evanov Radio Group Award is granted to an incoming student or students in the Master of Journalism program who have demonstrated an interest in broadcast journalism or new media. The award is valued at $5000 and can be given out as a single prize or divided into two or more separate prizes.

Undergraduate Designated Awards

These awards are based on specific criteria, as outlined in the award descriptions. They are based on both merit and financial need. The following entrance awards are available by application only. They are tenable for programmes at the University of King's College only. Completed applications are to be mailed to the Registar's Office, postmarked no later than March 1.

Students with financial need can also apply for bursaries.

Dr. Carrie Best Scholarship

This scholarship is offered by the University of King's College in honour of Dr. Carrie Best, the first African Canadian publisher in Nova Scotia, an accomplished writer and human rights activist. The scholarship is valued at $5,000 per year and is renewable for up to four years of study. There are two Dr. Carrie Best scholarships awarded each year. The Harrison McCain Scholar-Bursary

This scholarship is made possible by the generous support of the Harrison McCain Foundation. It is valued at $4,000 per year and is renewable for up to four years of study. This award is based on both academic merit and demonstrated financial need. Applications are considered from high school applicants in Canada entering King's in any one of the degree programmes offered. Harrison-McCain Scholar Bursary (PDF)

The Colin Starnes Award

This award is offered by the University of King's College in honour of our past president, Dr. Colin Starnes. It is valued at full tuition plus auxiliary fees for the first year of study at King's. This award in non-renewable. It is based on academic merit and demonstrated financial need. It is intended for a deserving and capable student who, without financial assistance, may not otherwise be able to attend King's. It is open to student applying from a high school within Nova Scotia. Applications should be accompanied by a letter of support from your high school principal. This form is included with the application. Colin Starnes Award Application (PDF)
