The college is more than just a place for you to learn—it is your learning community.

At King’s we believe that the highest level of learning takes place within community. It’s an old idea, dare we say, traditional, going back to the residential model on which the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge were founded. It’s our model, too.

The majority of our resident students are enrolled in the Foundation Year Programme, which creates a strong community of people who are sharing the same academic experience. Conversations spill over from the classroom into residence, as you and your friends work together to explore the ideas and insights you’ve been learning. Your social life will complement your academic work, and vice versa.

Our residential community also boasts an eclectic mix of upper-year students, many of whom have studied in the Foundation Year Programme themselves. These students study in the upper-year King’s programmes, or in the many different departments at Dalhousie University, such as statistics, English or International Development. A small number of students from other institutions, such as the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, also call King’s home each year. The conversations that emerge when you put all of these intellectual communities together are unique and challenging, to say the least.

But it’s not all work, of course—if you live at King’s you’ll forge friendships that will last your lifetime, and you’re bound to be involved in a variety of events and activities. The camaraderie and personal growth that come from living in residence, whether you’re in your first year of study or your last, is unparalleled. Many of our students speak of their time in residence as the highlight of their undergraduate career.
