King's College students nominated for international prize

A group of journalism students from the University of King's College in Halifax has been nominated for a prestigious international digital journalism award.

The students are among 58 nominated projects for the Data Journalism Awards, from the Global Editors Network. The awards are sponsored by Google and organized with the European Journalism Centre, according to a release.

More than 300 projects were entered from 60 countries.

The King's students were nominated for an interactive project called (902)9-1-1 in which they mapped 650,000 calls to the Halifax Regional Police, broken down by type of call and by street and wrote a series of stories flowing from that research.

They're nominated in the data driven applications, local/regional category and are up against the Texas Tribune, the Chicago Tribune, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and others.

Winners, who will get about $10,000 in prize money, will be announced in each of six categories on May 31 during the News World Summit in Paris.
