Tim Currie, assistant professor of online journalism at King's, has won the American Copy Editors Society Research on Editing Award. He presented his winning paper, "Social Media Editors in the News: A Survey of Roles and Functions," at the AEJMC conference in Chicago, August 9-12. Tim wins $100 in prize money and complementary registration to the ACES national conference in St Louis in 2013.
"It's a real honour to win this award," says Tim. "It's important that ACES acknowledges and supports research into new practices."
Tim conducted a survey among 13 social media editors at Canadian news organisations to determine their roles and functions. He discovered that these journalists must balance the demands of their newsrooms with the expectations of their readers, who expect online interaction.
