Academic Position in the Contemporary Studies Program (Part-time)

Established in 1789, King’s College is Canada’s oldest chartered university and is associated with Dalhousie University. A small and extraordinarily lively academic community located in Halifax (Kjipuktuk), Nova Scotia, King’s is known nationally and internationally for its highly acclaimed interdisciplinary programs in the humanities, including its renowned Foundation Year Program, its professional programs in journalism and its fine arts program in creative writing. King’s is a community where students, faculty, alumni, and staff work to bring greater understanding, creativity, and compassion to the world.

The University of King’s College’s Contemporary Studies Program invites applications for a part-time instructor who would be responsible for teaching the following course in the winter term (Jan.–Apr. 2026):

CTMP3410.03 winter Term—Studies in Contemporary Social and Political Thought: Representations of Disability in Historical, Scientific, and Artistic Perspectives

This class aims to make visible and challenge ableism through an interdisciplinary encounter with historical and contemporary representations of disability in arts, philosophy, science and activism. Embracing the social model that views disability as a product of societal barriers and attitudes, we will explore how ideas of “disability” and “normality” have changed over time and how they have been expressed in different cultures and contexts. Focusing on positive representations that affirm radical diversity, intersectionality and agency, we will seek to expand our vocabularies in order to contest ableist presuppositions about bodies, minds and psyches, and to envision change.

For 2025–2026, the class is scheduled in the winter term on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:05–11:25 a.m.

The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching 3 hours of classes per week, evaluating assignments, attending staff meetings and holding office hours. This position reports to the Director of the Program.

Qualifications and Experience

Applicants should possess, as a minimum requirement, a Master’s degree in interdisciplinary humanities or a relevant discipline or field of research, although a Ph.D. is preferred. Expertise in Disability studies will be an asset. Prior experience teaching at the university level is required.

Pay Rate: Remuneration is based upon qualifications and experience.

To apply: Applicants must submit a cover letter stating their qualifications for, and interest in, teaching the class and a curriculum vitae by noon on Friday, Nov 21, 2025 to:
