A native of Nova Scotia, Susan Renouf managed professional theatre and non-profit arts organizations before stumbling into publishing. She started in Vancouver with Douglas & McIntyre before continuing her career in Toronto as editorial director and marketing manager of Doubleday Book and Music Clubs, editorial director of Kids Can Press, and president and editor-in-chief of Key Porter Books. From 2004–2010, she was McClelland & Stewart’s vice-president, non-fiction publisher and chief operating officer. She is principal of Abanaki Editorial and Consulting, providing strategic advice and editorial services to the publishing industry. Most recently executive editor at large for ECW Press, publishing both fiction and non-fiction, she is currently a course instructor for the University of King’s College MFA program. Her authors have included Dennis Lee, Farley Mowat, Alanna Mitchell, Linda Spalding, Sarah Henstra, Maude Barlow, Helen Humphreys, Molly Peacock, Cordelia Strube and Waubgeshig Rice. Renouf has served as president of the Association of Canadian Publishers and the Ontario Book Publishers’ Organization, and as chair of eBound Canada, the digital collective of the Canadian-owned sector. Renouf’s consulting clients have included the Department of Canadian Heritage, Ontario Creates, the ACP, the Literary Press Group, The Book and Periodical Council, Creative BC and a number of Canadian publishers.
